Reading Notes: Narayan's Ramayana, Section A
Narayan's Ramayana
-I could rewrite the story where Ravana actually has divine protection from mortal men, BUT this clearly excludes women, so Rama is incarnated as a woman to defeat him.
-I could modernize the story where it happens in modern times and update the weaponry (crossbow) and traveling that occurs (a Jeep)!
-I could make the siblings work together to defeat Ravana rather than just have one main character
-The journey could span across all of Kosala, a feat that few had accomplished
-Could rewrite the sage to be very silly or not serious; perhaps very Yoda-like
-Dasaratha: emphasis on his parenting and attention to his sons. He is loved by many. King.
-Sage Viswamithra: has total control of his body through supernatural means
-Ravana: god with ten heads. Evil. Is invincible to other gods and supernatural beings. NOT humans or monkeys.
-Tension between king and sage.
-"Every human being, when the time comes, has to depart and seek his fulfillment in his own way.”
(Viswamithra)
-King insists sage take Lakshma with him and Rama
-Ash and smoke in air from Shiva meditating; god of love interfered and was burnt; sacrificial fires
-Desert: vegetation crumbled and rocks turned to powder; arid; sun forever overhead; fissures and bones
-The desert is so arid because of the wife of Sunda, who remains there (Thataka)
-Meditation is a recurring theme among the sage and the boys
-"A woman of demoniac tendencies loses all consideration to be treated as a woman." (Viswamithra). Very telling of how women were considered at the time.
-Asthras: weapon deities; appear before Rama
-The sage tells Rama many stories, including ones about Vishnu (who is Rama's true form, unknown to him)
-The entire ground holds divine importance; Mother Earth is one of the 5 "primeval elements;" It is important for Rama to know the stories of the ground he treads so that he may have full understanding
