Topic Research: Epic Battles
I kind of knew from the beginning I'd end up picking this topic:) I'm a sucker for a great fight scene.
An obvious choice for a whole slew of battle scenes to choose from would be Narayan's Ramayana! The story follows Rama's adventure to defeat Ravana, the ten-headed evil god. He encounters many evils, like lesser evil gods, Ravana's temptress sister, and a scorned, invincible king of a kingdom of monkeys. There are so many opportunities to write about Rama's battles whether as a girl, or a warrior with a sword (instead of a bow and arrow), or even as a crotchety old man who just wants to get the job done and go home.
Another interesting story I found is called Shiva Parvati: A Story of Divine Love. (It's one of the comic books). The battles depicted in this story are ones of spite and anger and passion. It's a little different than the ones I'm used to in the Ramayana. This battle takes place over a long period of time, making it through almost a generation. It's a war between divine couples! I think it would be great to change these characters to mortals, or even add an extra love triangle between the opposing spouses.
Finally, another story I enjoyed was another comic book entitled Tales of Durga: Tales of the Mother Goddess. This is a comic book filled with various stories, most about gruesome battles with asuras and animal forms of gods and merging from many gods into one. I think there are a lot of directions I could go with this one. I could choose just one story, or create one that has elements from each story. I think I could make the merging gods into something like Voltron or an anime magical girl transformation! I could make the buffalo transformation into another more humorous animal, like a turtle or a hippo. I could be cliché and do another gender switcheroo, but I'm hoping to find inspiration from other ideas I've come up with.
(I've created the links to send you to the reading guides since the comic books are physical copies).
