Reading and Writing

Last week was review week, so I missed out on making a "Reading and Writing" review post since I'm behind by a week. I will most likely use the extra credit options to catch back up on the official reading notes, so that way I will have done every assignment.

Overall, the assignments have been so much fun, and I'm so glad I've gotten the opportunity to start writing again. I used to write (and read) all the time back in high school, so I've been really disappointed that I haven't had as much time to do either while in college. They're a great way to get back into the habit. My favorite reading so far has probably been the Ramayana, as is probably apparent in all of my stories. I've taken a LOT of inspiration from the Ramayana, and I'm even using it as the basis for my Storybook. I love using my notes to look back through and remind me of what ideas I came up with while reading. I try and give myself plenty of options, even if they're not that interesting, that way I can pick my favorites or even come up with new ones while browsing what I wrote down.
So far, I'm really happy with my project! I've had a lot of fun coming up with characters and writing in their personalities, and I'm hoping the excitement shows through to the readers. I'm creating a Storybook about warriors who are chosen for the trials that Rama faced in the Ramayana. So far I only have one story up besides my introduction, so I'm very excited to share the rest with the class. I think I've accomplished a lot with my writing in this course, and also with time management. There have been a few rough patches, and I am indeed behind by a bit, but I've finally worked out a schedule that works for me and I hope to catch up with some extra credit because this course has been way too fun for me to not to do my best.

So far, the above image is my favorite one that I've used for a story so far. I used it to represent Draupadi and her five suitors because to me, that was a really humorous moment in the Mahabharata. She simply wanted another husband, but since she prayed for one five times, she got five husbands. I felt like the picture illustrated her predicament in a humorous way, as well as continued my trend of using anime/manga pictures.

Looking forward, one obvious thing I need to do is catch back up with the readings. By using some extra credit this week, I should be able to do that quite easily. Aside from that, I think I could benefit from varying my storytelling modes, such as writing an epic poem, or changing up the stories from humor to more serious themes with suspense or horror. Most importantly, I need to keep on track with my assignments from here on out to make sure that I'm not procrastinating, thus sacrificing the quality of my work.

  1. Hi Haley! If you missed out on last week's assignments, just move on to Week 9; you can use the prompts for the week 8 assignments to do a Famous Last Words post for example (so for this post, you could call it Famous Last Words for this week). The idea is to just keep swimming; don't look back. :-)
